What are bed bugs and what do bed bugs look like?

Bed bugs are insects that have flat, oval-shaped bodies about 1/4 inch long. They are often dark red with whitish eggs the size of a pinhead. Bed bugs often lay eggs in clusters of 10-50 eggs which are normally hidden in cracks and crevices and hatch within 10 days. They have a one-year life span during which a female can lay 200-400 eggs. What do bed bugs feed on?

Bed bugs feed on human blood, mammals and birds. Bed bugs often bite at night anywhere on the human body, but most commonly around the face, neck, torso, and arms. How do I treat bed bug bites?

Most bed bug bites go away by themselves and don’t need treatment. If the bites are very irritating, you may want to contact your doctor to prescribe cream or antihistamines to relieve the itchiness.

Can you get sick from bed bugs?

Once thought to be harmless, recent studies have found cases of bed bugs carrying serious infection-causing bacteria. Although not all bed bugs carry bacteria, it’s impossible to know which ones do. If you have bed bug bites, watch for abnormalities, and if you’re unsure, consult a physician immediately to assess your bites. Overall, excessive scratching of bud bug bites can cause infections that would need to be treated accordingly.

Where do bed bugs come from?

Bed bugs are often carried into a home on infested objects like luggage, clothes and furniture. Bed bugs can also travel from apartment to apartment along pipes, electrical wiring and other openings.

Where should I look for bed bugs in my home?

Check for live Bed bugs or shells in seams, creases, and folds of mattresses, or cracks in the bed frame and headboard. You can also find them under chairs, couches, rugs and carpets. Be sure to check around window and door casings, behind electrical plates and under loose wallpaper, paintings and posters. Don’t forget to check in cracks in the wall, in telephones, radios, and clocks.
