Some of the worst reported cases of bed bug infestation have been found in the homes of seniors. As we get older, our senses aren’t quite what they used to be, which means it may be more difficult detecting bed bugs before the problem gets out of hand. Though signs of bed bugs may seem obvious to us, with poor eyesight and weakened senses, detecting bed bugs isn’t as simple as it seems.
Even if seniors are able to spot signs of bed bugs, they may be reticent when it comes to seeking help from family members or professional bed bug exterminators. They may find it difficult to ask for assistance, be embarrassed, or even believe the old stereotypes that suggest having bed bugs in your home means you’re dirty or unable to care for your home. (For the record, this has been proven patently false. Detecting bed bugs has nothing to do with your home’s cleanliness.)
Do bed bug bites affect seniors any differently? Are they more dangerous to seniors?
Because of their age, more delicate skin and weaker immune systems, seniors often have a much worse time dealing with bed bug bites. Though bed bugs typically leave behind itchy red bites, some seniors may find bed bug bites painful.
Though they are annoying and may even painful, unless the infestation is very bad, bed bugs pose little threat to one’s health or safety. However, those dealing with bed bug bites may find they suffer from bed bug anxiety – which can cause distress at the thought of going to bed, or suffering from more bed bug bites, even if the bed bugs are gone.
What can you to ensure your loved ones don’t have to worry about bed bugs?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions or check in on them, even if they’re resistant to accepting help. If you’re concerned that someone you know is living with a bed bug infestation, it’s better that the problem is uncovered sooner rather than later. If left untreated, bed bug infestations can and will get worse, and ultimately require more time and effort to eliminate.
