Recent headlines indicate that bed bugs have been found in Toronto libraries. Though this may seem strange on the surface, bed bugs and their namesake don’t necessarily go hand in hand. They are quite happy to live just about anywhere humans can be found.
In recent years, with the explosion of bed bug infestations, the variety of places where bed bugs can be found has become quite varied. This includes bed bugs in libraries, hotels, shopping malls, movie theatres, and even on public transit.
Most companies that discover bed bugs onsite are happy to react swiftly. The Toronto Public Library asserts that all locations that have discovered bed bugs in books or on furniture – 24 incidents in the past year – have undergone investigation, and subsequently bed bug removal treatments.
If you’re still worried, there are ways to protect yourself.
The good news is that bed bugs are primarily nocturnal, so they are most active at night and prefer to remain hidden during the day. As long as you’re not sitting or inactive in a place with a bed bug infestation for a long period of time, the chances of a bed bug crawling into your clothes during the daylight hours is quite small. Regardless, checking for bed bugs prior to entering your home, or washing your clothes in hot water immediately after entering, guarantees you stop the problem before it begins.
Also potentially concerning are items that have been left in bed bug infested areas. Library books are a perfect example. Since bed bugs like to remain hidden during the day, they’ll crawl into any concealed space, including books. If you must take home an item from an area that you suspect is infested with bed bugs, inspect it prior to bringing it home. Be sure to check for both bed bugs and bed bug eggs. If you want to be especially cautious, seal the item in a plastic bag and leave it in your freezer for a week. Bed bugs cannot survive extreme temperatures.
