Do Certain Perfumes or Scents Make Bed Bugs Bite More Often?

eliminate bed bug bites

Have you spotted bed bug bites on your skin, recently? (If you’re not sure, see our guide on differentiating bed bug bites from other insect bites, or see our bed bug gallery, which includes bed bug bite pictures.)

Believe it or not, the way you smell may be a factor in whether or not you’re getting bed bug bites. If you share a bed with someone who is not getting bitten as severely, it may be because you smell better to the bed bugs in your home. (Another common reason is immunity to bed bug venom.) Certain scented lotions and perfumes can be a factor in why bed bugs bite you rather than another target.

Though bed bugs are primarily attracted to their targets when they detect high levels of carbon dioxide, it is believed that certain sweet scents make you a more likely target for bed bug bites. When given a choice between multiple targets, bed bugs tend to prefer to bite the one that smells sweeter. However this is not a universal absolute, and your experiences may vary.

There are also some scents that bed bugs do not like and tend to avoid. However, there is no such thing as a perfume, lotion or scent that acts as a permanent bed bug repellent. Though a scent may deter bed bugs temporarily, if they are hungry and you are their only target, they will bite eventually regardless of what you smell like.

If you’re suffering from bed bug bites, using scent is not an effective deterrent and is definitely not a replacement for bed bug extermination.

For help with permanent bed bug extermination, call Magical Pest Control’s dedicated bed bug removal division at (905) 738-6676. Call for a bed bug inspection and if we discover a bed bug infestation in your home, we’ll begin bed bug extermination treatments as soon as possible.

  1. This is anecdotal unless you post actual research results.
CO2 is the strongest attractor to bed bugs, and of course every living human exhales CO2.. There are variations in terms of who may be bitten or sense being bitten, but as far as I know, no one has published any definitive research on this so why confuse the issue with this kind of post?
Certainly there are insect repellents, Deet being the best known, but I recently saw a post of someone from south Asia telling how villagers used neem leaf smoke to repell bed bugs temporarily.. Neem is a known natural insecticide… Anyone that recommends repellents or any kind of lotion to deter bed bugs doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
but there are always interesting new findings that people can hardly believe. I just read an article in NY Times about treatment of severe colitis with a stool enema from a health donor stool to transfer the bionome of bacteria to someone who is experiencing severe colitis.. and apparently this works.. who would have imagined!!! but this is based on solid science, not on anecdotal speculation…
The guy who found a bacteria that caused ulcers was also thought to be off his rocker, so we don’t close our minds to possibilities, but bed bugs have been on us for some extensive time, probably at least 100,000 years… and what works best is good solid service by well trained staff… no rush jobs or spray as sole treatment or use of mickey mouse handheld vacuums not worth five cents…. Does your bed bug firm supply their staff with professional continuous fill steam/vac machine and do they spend enough time? Do they even have a steam machine…? Are they using old style stainless steel tanks and not power crack and crevice machines.?
if this is the case, hire a firm that does the job professionally…
If a tech is expected to do 10 or more bed bug calls a day in multi bedroom apartments…. it is not the right firm..
As for perfume… you know less is more…
if you get blasted downwind,, not a good sign…

Fifteen minutes in an apartment is a joke….

  3. Im having a serious phobia here since i have bed bugs bites all over my body everytime i look at them i panic and feel like in going to faint and I share imy bed with my partner and im the only one who’s getting attacked im so sick of it i hope the bites wont leave marks they’re so ugly T_T

    • Hi Jessi,
Bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, and usually light to dark brown – if that matches the description of your pests, it’s probably bet bugs. Having a cat most likely isn’t the problem, as pets don’t ‘carry’ bed bugs like they do fleas. It is possible for bed bugs to only bite one person, even if there are multiple people in the same bed. If you suspect that you have bed bugs, the best thing you can do is contact a pest control company in your area immediately. The sooner you act the better. We hope you’re able to find a solution.
