Does Vacuuming Get Rid of Bed Bugs?

Vacuuming will help get rid of bed bugs. But it’s not the only step you need to take to kick those critters out of your space. Since getting rid of bed bugs on your own is very difficult, you should call a bed bug exterminator to resolve the issue permanently. Vacuuming, however, is a great way to prepare for bed bug treatment (link to bed bug treatment prep post that’s not yet published), and it does get rid of a lot of bed bugs, making it easier to treat your home. Read our tips below to find out what to vacuum and how often you should do so.

Getting rid of bed bugs in your home

What You Need:

First of all, ensure you have a vacuum with a crevice tool, a brush and ample vacuum bags.

What to Vacuum:

Vacuum the following meticulously on a daily basis in preparation for getting rid of bed bugs:

  • Rugs, carpets and floors
  • Bed frames
  • Furniture (including behind furniture)
  • Cracks and crevices

Before the bed bug exterminator comes, vacuum:

  • Mattresses, box springs and the perimeter around each
  • Your room (including baseboards)
  • Bookcases and other shelving units
  • Upholstered furniture such as couches, chairs and recliners (including seams of cushions, areas where cushions sit, dust covers and underneath the sofas or chairs if possible)
  • The insides of drawers and cabinets, and underneath them if you can
  • Curtains and blinds

When it comes to getting rid of bed bugs, be meticulous when vacuuming upholstered furniture and curtains, as these are the most common spots for bed bugs to hide.

Vacuuming Your Mattress and Box Spring

Vacuum your mattress and box spring to remove live or dead bed bugs. To stop bed bugs from biting, put your mattress in a bed bug proof encasement, which is thick enough so that bed bugs won’t bite through it, and has tight zippers that won’t let the bugs escape.

What Not to Vacuum

Do not vacuum around the wall perimeters and baseboards for at least one week after treatment by a bed bug exterminator.

How to Dispose of Your Vacuum Bags

When you’re finished vacuuming, double bag the vacuum bag and discard it in an outdoor garbage immediately. This will help prevent bed bugs from returning or spreading.
