How Do I Avoid Bed Bug Infestations?

If you find a bed bug in your home, chances are there are more. You may only find traces of bed bugs before discovering the culprit. Avoid Bed Bug Infestations – Solve the Problem Early

Once you realize you have bed bugs, don’t bring anything into the contaminated room. Bed bugs are hitchhikers in nature and will jump at the opportunity to move into other rooms in your home. They might also hitch a ride on you, so don’t sleep in a new bed or on your sofa. Avoid immediately bagging things up or throwing things away. Bagging items without washing them in hot water will not solve your problem. Bed bugs can survive up to 18 months without feeding and they may end up reentering into your home. Throwing contaminated items out will only give the bed bugs a new home, which isn’t fair to somebody else!

Bed bugs may not travel in packs, but they can quickly develop into them. Bed bugs can lay 4 to 5 eggs a day. A female can lay hundreds of eggs in their lifetime. The longer you wait to deal with your bed bugs, the more bed bugs you have to deal with. If you learn how to recognize the signs of bed bugs early on you can avoid bed bug infestations in your home!

  1. Hi! My husband and I are unsure if we have bed bugs. I’ve been getting bites all over the left side of my body and he’s had nothing. We’ve checked every night for signs but have yet to see any. Neither of us have travelled since August and the bites have just started in the last week. Can you shed some light?

    • Hi Frances,

We’re sorry to hear of your bed bug troubles. Unfortunately, it is possible for one person to experience a reaction to bed bug bites while another person in the same bed experiences nothing. See our article on how some people do not react the bed bug venom here – http://www.bedbugremoval.ca/does-everyone-show-symptoms-of-bed-bug-bites/

Bed bugs can and do find their way into your home through ways other than travelling, though that’s the most common. Other common sources of bed bugs include: a neighbouring home with bed bugs, visiting friends and family members and secondhand furniture or clothing.

Also, being unable to find signs of bed bugs doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Bed bugs like to keep hidden, and so spotting them can be difficult, especially if the infestation is in its earliest stages. Try checking the seams of your mattress and bedding, as well as furniture surrounding your bed. In this case, since you’re experiencing bites, we recommend calling a local pest control company to do a more thorough inspection before the problem has a chance to worsen.
