The cold of winter is upon on, so it’s tempting to go away and avoid the snow and bitter cold. However, going on vacation comes with it’s own set of issues. One of the potential issues you should be aware of: bed bugs.
Nothing can ruin your vacation faster than waking up to find yourself covered in bed bug bites. In order to make the most of your trip, free of bed bugs, follow these tips before you take off on vacation.
How to Avoid Bed Bugs on Vacation
- Check the Bed Bug Registry Before You Book
The bed bug registry is a helpful resource available to the public. It lists known and suspected bed bug outbreaks, and when they occurred. If the hotel has a history of multiple bed bug infestations in recent months, it might be wise idea to choose other accommodations.
- Use Hard-Sided Luggage
Hard-sided luggage is much more difficult for bed bugs to get into. This means even if you do encounter bed bugs, they are less likely to follow you home.
- Keep Your Belongings in Ziplock Bags
If you’d like to be extra cautious, keeping your clothing and other belongings in ziplock bags when you travel is another safeguard against bed bugs. Bed bugs cannot bite through plastic.
- Inspect Your Room When You Arrive
Even if you think your room is free of bed bugs, it doesn’t hurt to do a cursory check to verify. Bed bugs are known for keeping well hidden, so taking a few minutes when you first arrive to check for noticeable signs of bed bugs can save you a lot of hassle and prevent you from becoming the victim of annoying bed bug bites.
- If in Doubt, Ask For a Room Change
If you’re concerned that there may be bed bugs in your hotel room, request a room change. When it comes to bed bugs, you’re better safe than sorry. Most hotels will be happy to accommodate your request to put your mind at ease.
- Check Your Luggage Before You Leave
If you suspect that you were occupying a room that had a bed bug infestation, check your luggage for signs of bed bugs before you leave. If you spot bed bugs, their eggs, or any other indicators, it’s much easier to decontaminate your luggage than to try and eradicate an entire bed bug population in your home. Wash all your linens and clothes on the hot cycle to decontaminate them.
