Not sure if it’s bed bugs? Below we’ve explained a few common ways to detect bed bugs in your home. If you experience any of these signs, you most likely have a bed bug infestation.
1. Bed Bug Bites vs. Flea Bites vs. Mosquito Bites
A good indicator of a bed bug infestation is bed bug bites all over you body. But how do you know if it’s a bed bug bite and not a flea bite or mosquito bite? The bite of a bed bug differs from that of a flea or mosquito in multiple ways.
The easiest way to distinguish if it’s a bed bug bite or another bite is from how many there are and how it feels. Although they look similar to each other, a bed bug bite will not hurt, whereas a flea bite will. A bed bug bite will be extremely itchy, but it won’t be painful.
So what if it’s a mosquito bite? Mosquito bites tend to swell and are usually just a few apart from each other, whereas bed bug bites will be clustered together, often in a triangle shape. Mosquito bites and the surrounding area will also turn red when scratched, while bed bug bites will not.
2. Bed bugs leave little bloodstains on your sheets
Unless you scratched yourself in your sleep, those tiny bloodstains on your sheets are probably from bed bugs feeding. Look for dark or rusty spots on your sheets, furniture, and even clothes.
3. It looks like there’s rice in or around your bed
Bed bug eggs look like little grains of rice (they’re usually about 1-2 mm in size and a white or off-white colour) and can be found anywhere in your bed, mattress, and even nearby furniture. Keep an eye out for anything in these areas that look like grains of white rice.
4. Bed bugs leave black spots in hiding places
As if bloody spots weren’t bad enough, be on the lookout for black spots, otherwise bed bug droppings in secluded areas like between your bed frame, in drawers, and carpets.
5. An unusual odour, like musty raspberries or coriander
If there are enough bed bugs in your bed bug infestation, you may be able to smell their odour. It is often compared to the smell of musty raspberries coriander, depending on whom you ask. So if you’re getting a strong whiff of an unpleasant or unexpected scent and there’s not an herb garden on your bedroom windowsill, you should be concerned!
