Though bed bugs can be found and thrive in all seasons, recent studies show that prime “bed bug season” occurs in the summer, while the least active bed bug season is in the winter. Bed bugs’ reproduction cycle is at its peak in August and at its slowest around February. The warmer temperatures are more optimal for reproducing.
That’s not to say that you can’t find yourself with a brand new bed bug infestation in the middle of the winter. Bringing home bed bugs from travelling, a neighbour’s or furniture with a bed bug infestation are all ways you might find yourself with a bed bug problem, even when the temperatures drop.
What Does This Mean For Bed Bug Treatment?
Not much, unfortunately. The difference in growth of a bed bug infestation from season to season is nominal. Bed bugs can and will thrive in any season or setting. This means you can be dealing with a severe bed bug infestation at any time of year, even in the dead of winter.
Though bed bugs cannot survive in subzero freezing temperatures (like those produced by a bed bug freeze treatment) the temperature much reach and stay at –30 C, to kill bed bugs. Those temperatures are rarely sustained for long periods, even in harsh Canadian winters, and bed bugs will remain warm in toasty in your heated home, despite chilly outside temperatures. During the winter, however it is more difficult for them to travel from home to home.
