While there are many different species of bed bugs (and plenty more distant blood-sucking relatives), it’s generally agreed that the two most common types of bed bugs that occupy human spaces are Cimix Lectularius, or ‘the common bed bug’ and Cimix Hemipterus, or ‘the tropical bed bug.’ The physical differences between the two are minimal, though some claim that the bed bug bites left by Hemipterus are more painful.
The tropical bed bug originated in warmer climates such as South America, while the common bed bug originated in the more temperate climates of Europe and North America. However, both species of bed bug are now found all over the world, and referred to as bed bugs interchangeably. Due to the nature of globalization in the 21st century, and frequent travel and vacationing, travellers bring both species of bed bug home. Both types of bed bugs have the ability to thrive and breed in any climate. Read some of our tips on avoiding bed bugs when travelling.
If your home is infested by bed bugs, a specific type of bed bug in your home doesn’t affect the bed bug treatment method. Chemical, freeze and bed bug heat treatments can be used to kill both species of bed bug effectively.
