Unfortunately, the answer is usually NO.
With the cost of bed bug removal sometimes climbing into the high thousands, it’s not easy to budget for unexpected bed bug extermination costs. You may be paying home insurance premiums monthly, but that doesn’t guarantee protection from bed bugs. If you’re unfortunate enough to get a bed bug infestation, you probably won’t see any help from your home insurance provider.
In recent years, with the resurgence of bed bugs across the globe, some home insurance plans have been updated to include bed bug insurance but those are few and far between.
So why don’t insurance companies include protection from bed bugs?
It’s quite simple. They prefer to cover risks they can calculate. Determining how likely you are to have a heart attack? Simple math. The likelihood of contracting bed bugs? Not so much. Sources of bed bugs aren’t always easily determined and there’s no surefire way to prevent bed bugs or determine who will or won’t get them.
So what should you be looking for in your home insurance plan to determine if you’re covered for protection from bed bugs?
Most insurance plans have exclusions that prevent you from collecting on expenses incurred due to “vermin,” a broad term used to describe “harmless pests” ranging from cockroaches to rats, and of course, bed bugs.
A clause excluding “vermin” means you’re most likely not covered for the cost of bed bug extermination. More likely than not, you will not be able to collect on any physical damages – such as the cost of bed bug extermination, furniture replacement or cleaning.
However, you may still be able to collect on liability issues – that is danger presented to your well-being or the well-being of those who enter your home – though that is dependent on your insurance provider.
The best way to know the extent of your bed bug insurance coverage is to call your insurance company and ask.
