It’s happened. You woke up this morning to find the first of those dreaded bed bug bites on your arm. Ugh. But before you fly into a blind panic and start selling all your belongings on Kijiji, remember that there are several steps you can take to help you get rid of your bed bug problems.
1. Tell your landlord.
This may sound obvious, but make sure you inform your landlord immediately. Tell them you have bed bug bites, or state other evidence of the sneaky little critters. Even if it turns out to not be bed bugs, it’s better to be safe than sorry. It might be a good idea to even send them a letter or email; having these things in writing can never hurt. Remember, it’s legally their responsibility to treat bed bug infestations.
2. Ask which company they are using?
Make sure that your landlord is using a reputable and trustworthy company. Hit up your good friend Google, and do a little research. If you can’t find any information on the company they’re using, be wary. Suggest a company like Magical Pest Control. We offer 10% off for first time customers.
3. Inquire about what kind of bed bug treatment they will be providing?
More often than not a landlord will not be willing to spring for the better quality heat treatments. They generally tend to opt for the standard chemical treatment. While this is still an effective method of bed bug removal, if the apartment building has had past bed bug infestations, it is likely that this treatment will only be temporary. Completely eradicating bed bugs from a large apartment building is difficult. If the bed bug infestation is caught early, and owner chooses a heat treatment method, then there is a much higher chance that the problem will not continue.
4. Prepare your apartment accordingly before the treatment.
This does not mean throw all your belongings away and buy a whole new wardrobe (unless you really want to). Magical Pest will provide you with a list of steps that need to be taken before the treatment. These steps will of course vary depending on the type of treatment you are receiving. If you are receiving the standard chemical treatment, make sure to clean your floors, move all furniture away from your walls and put all clothing and fabrics through a cycle in your dryer and in plastic bags. Properly preparing your apartment will help in the bed bug removal process.
5. Inform your neighbours, if your landlord hasn’t already done so.
While it might seem embarrassing to have to have to confess your bed bug problems to your neighbours, it is an extremely important step to take. Bed bugs can move from apartment to apartment. In a perfect world, your landlord would inform other tenants of the presence of bed bugs in the building. Unfortunately, however, this is often not the case. Informing the other tenants is not just the neighbourly thing to do; it’s the best way to ensure that the bed bugs aren’t just setting up camp somewhere else in the building. If they do this, you never know when they’ll make their way back to your apartment again.
